Jimmy Thomas had a tuna fish sandwich everyday at school lunch, thus... "Tunny"

Shawtown Italian Reunion

New Castle, Delaware October 8, 1988

Although an Italian, Christoforo Colombo discovered America, Amerigo Vespucci gave it his name, Verrazano sailed by and noted Delaware Bay and John Cabot (Giovanni Cabot) claimed North America for England, only a few Italians settled along the Atlantic seaboard.

The largest group of Italians to settle during this period consisted of 200 French speaking Protestants form Piedmont, whom was known as “Waldensians”. Documentation is scant, but a few weeks after they arrived in New Amsterdam they reportedly moved to New Amstel (New Castle) in 1657.

They were the last until at St. Peter’s record the baptism of Jacob Joseph DiMatteo, son of Franciscus and Maria DiMatteo on December 27, 1887.

The 1910 Census lists only Carlo and Maria Marcozzi in New Castle, three children (Rose, Mary John) and 7 boarders (presumably Italian) living together and states that Carlo arrived in America in 1891, was working for the Pennsylvania railroad, and was able to read and write English. He first came to New Castle in 1903 with his wife Maria and his brothers Francesco and Davido.

Others who arrived before World War 1 were:
Vincenzo Di Giangiacomo (Gonzon), Pietro Ottaviano (Octavio), Giaginto DiSantis,Luigi, Achille and Antonio Marcozzi,Ferdinado Tritelli, Pasquale and Giovanni Marcozzi,Antonio Coccia, Nicola Scaramozzi, Giuseppe Medora, Giovanni DiMondi,Antonio DiAmario,Francesco Covelli, Giavoni Lalli,Francesco and Nicola Ianni, Feliciano Susi, Illario and Enrico Manetti, Francesco Ciafre Antonio Castiglione, Illario and Settimio Baldini, Tadeo Sterlichi, Sabatino DiDomenicis, Antonio DiPietropaolo (DiPietropaul), Luciano Di Giralamo, Iafetti Celli, Nicola Consorti, Teodo Iacucci, (Yacucci) and Guido Camponelli.

Carlo & Nicolo

Nat Alvini’s favorite wine story as told by Jimmy Gambacorta

There was this Carlo Spacasso, a wonderful old man, who seemed to always be more tipsy than sober.  Carlo himself made a lot of fatta-in-casa (homemade) wine. One evening, he invited his neighbor Nicolo Scaramozzi, a quiet unassuming man, over for a glass or two of wine. In Carlo’s basement they sat, chatting and sipping. There was actually more sipping than chatting. When it got to be near 10 PM, Nicolo said “Compare’ it’s time for me to leave, I had better go home now”.

Carlo replied “Aspetto Compare’ Faccio io la caminata con te  Wait friend, I will walk you home”.

And he did. Nicolo lived only two blocks from Carlo.

On arrival at the house, Nicolo said to Carlo “Compare, come on in. We will have a little of my wine”.  And Carlo did go in.

They had first one glass of wine, then two, and then three.

When the clock was beginning to near the hour of midnight, Carlo said, “Compare, Nicolo, I must go home now. It is getting late”. And Nicolo said “you can’t go home alone, Compare’. I will walk with you”. And, so together they walked back to Carlo’s house.

Nat never did learn what hour of the morning this two –person party finished up.
